The MCU Got Its Most Powerful Superhero To Date With The Arrival Of ‘Doctor Strange’

Sure the MCU is filled with fearsome superheroes with ass-kicking superpowers, but one character overwhelms them all- Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange. Comic-book fans would easily agree that the Sorcerer Supreme is a mighty addition to MCU’s Avengers. This is because of the vast amount of overwhelming abilities he possesses.

Origin

Dr. Stephen Strange has a wide set of capabilities which he gains by learning the art of mysticism. In the comics, Strange severely damages the nerves of his hands in a car accident. Incurable by Western medicine, he seeks a remedy for his hands in the mountains of Himalayas and meets the Ancient One. Upon witnessing his immense power, Stephen accepts him as his mentor to learn the skill of magic. Once having mastered diverse mystical talents, he takes on the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme.

Abilities

Stephen can call upon his primary patrons called the ‘Vishanti’. He can also call upon the demon ‘Dormammu’. He once stated that he can kill a mortal with the mere twitch of a finger. Dr. Strange can sense any dangers that might come from time travelers and extra-dimensional invaders. He achieves this universal awareness through extreme meditation and can banish threatening creatures using it.

Like the Vision, Vincent has intangibility. He has the power of transmutation that is, changing reality, and can project his soul out of his body as can be seen in this clip from Doctor Strange below.

He can also teleport and travel to other dimensions. He can fly too, which he preferably does using the ‘Cape Of Levitation’. Telepathy, telekinesis, time manipulation and hypnotism are some other key features if his power.

Strange v The New Avengers

The true extent of his powers can be realized by an awesome fight between him and the New Avengers from the ‘New Avengers’ Vol 2 (2012). He manages to defeat the majority of the team (that included Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Red Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Spider-Woman, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Thing and Mockingbird), which unveils how strong he actually is.

What Does This Mean For The MCU?

Now we might not see Dr. Strange exhibiting the true range of his powers in the MCU, but we may see his abilities developing and increasing over time. We know for sure though, that he has control over transmutation, flight and astral projection.

Most likely, the Ancient One has also taught him universal awareness of quite a few things.

“There are other ways to save lives. So much you don’t know.” – The Ancient One

If so, maybe he also knows about Thanos and the threat he poses to the world.
